Professor Zhang Limin attended the Shan Jian Forum to share insights on remote sensing satellites and space computing power. Cutting-edge Achievements

On the morning of April 24, Professor Zhang Limin, Academician of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering and Distinguished Professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, was invited the Shan Jian Forum at the School of Civil Engineering, and delivered a specialized academic lecture in celebration of the 105th anniversary of Nanchang University. Professor Li Huokun, the executive dean of the Engineering Construction college, presided over this meeting.

At the conference, Professor Zhang Limin delivered a presentation titled "The HKUST Remote Sensing Satellite Constellation and Space Computing Infrastructure Development." He provided a systematic overview of the HKUST's remote sensing satellite constellation deployment, the construction of its space computing platform, and its applications in disaster monitoring and early warning. He further elaborated in depth on the integrated approaches for remote sensing data acquisition, in-orbit processing, intelligent interpretation, and digital twin-based disaster mitigation. This presentation significantly broadened the academic perspectives of faculty and students in the interdisciplinary fields of remote sensing, spatial information, artificial intelligence, and disaster prevention and mitigation, offering important guidance for the university's interdisciplinary development of the "Future Infrastructure Engineering" discipline, the transformation of civil engineering programs, and the cultivation of high-caliber talent.

During the interactive session, Professor Zhang Limin provided detailed responses to questions from faculty and students, offering constructive insights into research directions such as landslide digital twin modeling and intelligent risk assessment. His remarks helped delineate promising pathways for advancing the college’s future research agenda.

This high-level academic exchange event has further strengthened the forum as a premier academic platform, significantly advanced the development and scientific innovation of civil and hydraulic engineering disciplines within the college. It has also fostered deepened international collaboration, and laid a solid foundation for subsequent joint research and collaborative efforts to address key technological challenges.

[Professor Zhang Limin Profile] Zhang Limin is a member of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering, a national-level talent, a Chair Professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He serves as Director of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Deputy Director of the National Key Laboratory of Climate Resilience in Coastal Cities. His research focuses on landslide and debris flow mechanisms and risk control, dam safety, and digital twin applications for disaster risk management. He currently serves as Chairman of the Dam Technical Committee of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE), Editor-in-Chief of Georisk, Co-Editor-in-Chief of Geodata&Al, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering, and editorial board member of journals such as Engineering Geology and Computers and Geotechnics. He was awarded the title of "National Outstanding Engineer," delivered the Peck Lecture at the American Society of Civil Engineers, and presented the ISSMGE Lacasse Lecture and Wilson Tang Lecture.
